Professional mentoring programme

As part of our commitment to helping final year undergraduate students improve the prospects of obtaining a graduate job once students have completed their degree, Solent Careers run a professional mentoring programme which will run from October 2025 until Easter 2026.

The professional mentoring programme is a fantastic way to gain advice and knowledge from those in various industries. You may have thought of what you’d like to pursue when you leave university, and we can help you by matching you with a mentor within that certain area that you wish to explore.

How the professional mentoring programme can help you

The professional mentoring programme is targeted towards final-year undergraduate students who will be matched with a mentor in the industry they wish to go into. In addition to mentors being in certain industries, there are some who have started their own business or are self-employed and these types of mentors can also be matched with students.

The knowledge and advice from these mentors will help you considerably and give you confidence in knowing how to get to where you want to be.

Once matched, the programme will run from October and finish before Easter. We expect students to have met with their mentor on numerous occasions during this time.

Overall, the mentoring programme will help you with your confidence and will help you decide what profession will be ideal for you as you embark on post-university life.

How the professional mentoring programme works

The way the programme works is for final year undergraduate students to liaise with their mentor on specific areas that they wish to go into. For example, a student who is studying film and television or television production will likely be matched with a mentor within this field. Therefore, this student may wish to know about how to get into the film and television sector and what skills would they need. They may wish to ask their mentor about interview practice and to see whether their mentor can give them contacts that they can network with.

Students may wish to add their mentor on LinkedIn and explore what their mentor has done in their profession and be signposted to other people or organisations that specialise within the field they wish to go into once their degree has been completed.

How to sign up and the system you'll use

You will answer a variety of questions on the specifically designed system, Vygo. This is where you will create your own profile and following the answers you submit, you will be matched with a mentor. This is when the programme commences and Vygo will be the way you communicate with your mentor throughout the programme and log the various discussions you have.

Vygo is an exciting platform where you can log your conversations and arrange when to have your mentoring sessions. It is always advisable that when you’re in a session, ensure to arrange your next session.
